I finished the orangerie fabric chairs that will go with my large skirted crafting table:) So, I used to be so scared to paint wood. I thought that nice wood furniture was rare and precious. Almost half of our furniture is dark brown, wood antiques and those scared me even more to paint. This is, in part ,why I ended up with a house decorated in brown. After spending a lot of time on craigslist and thrift shopping, I realized that many of my antiques are not so rare and precious and that a coat of new paint could be exactly what they are screaming for. While many people do not agree with my decision to paint some older pieces, I have to do what is right for me. Yes, this is becoming an anology for larger life issues, but I am finding that in decorating, you have to trust your gut and do what feels right to you, not what you think other people, blogs, designers think is right.
So, for the chairs going with our large skirted table, I used some old dining room chairs that I had and decided to paint them black. I knew that the deep brown wood (seen below) would not do the orangerie fabric justice.

So, to my spray painting playground (back yard) and got to work. I chose flat black because I feel like that has a very modern look to it. However, here is the issue with spray painting and the thing that I am still figuring out.... I suck at puting on a top protective coat. So, I put the flat black with my spray can on and it look amazing, but I knew these high traffic chairs needed that top coat.... so I start putting on a semi gloss polyuethane with a brush and it look all streaky and it got gooky around the sides for me. Luckily, I pulled it through and the chairs look great. The key is to put the thinnest layers of polyurethane on, but that it so time consuming and tediousI have decided that my next piece, I am going to try sealing with a furniture wax... I think I will do a lot better with that approach.
I had unscrewed the seat cushions, covered them with my new fabric and screwed them back in after the paint was dry. I love the way they turned out.
