One of the things I loved the most about our house was the large upstairs with a lot of living space. Like our downstairs, we fit our existing furniture up there and havn't touched the space since. My goal is to make the space a bit more functional. The space needs to serve three purposes: 1) small sitting area for games and tv watching 2) crafting for both myself and the kids/design work space; and 3) office/computer space. While each of those spaces, functions currently exists, they all fall short. I want to make this a space that we want to spend more time in, because currently we spend most of our time downstairs.
Here are some pictures as it exists now. It is kind of Boring, and Dark, and Brown.
Here is the sitting area. The roman shades are new, in my dream Zimba fabric. See the brick wall seperating what we term the sitting area from the office area behind it. The wing back is going to go. Its is too big for the space. I am on the hunt for a low profile armless antique chair that I can do my first upholstery project on! Below is where we will put the new long skirted desk/craft table (in between the two windows).
This is the current desk with printer beside it. This area will stay the same, but will put sheep skin on desk chair along with a Zimba fabric pillow. I will also skirt the printer table.
This is the space when you walk upstairs. I want to put a chest here with a large mirror on top.
Again, the space feels really dark so we need to brighten it all up. If money was not an option, I would paint all the walls a bright clean white, but we are working with a soft beige all in the house. Soft beige, i.e. light brown. Well, at least it is all neutral. In the upcoming posts, I will share my ideas for the space. As you can see in the pictures, there are new roman shades. These were just put up yesterday, before that we had no window coverings.
The first stage is creating my mood board. I think the place i started was with fabric. Fabric is such an inspiration. The next stage is getting all the clutter out of here. This is kind of the space where we put all the leftovers.. an ugly floor lamp, all our mismatched picture frames, Brian's Restoration Hardware fan and old timey phone (both from the bargain bin). I mean do we really need an old timey phone when we don't even have a land line?
I hope after this is complete, that we will use this space a lot more. I hope that that I create a vibe that really draws us up from the downstairs to spend more time up here. My next post should reveal some of my ideas for the space.
